Women doing aqua gymnastics in the pool

To the Optimisation of conservative therapy measures and to the Support for swelling reduction and tissue tightening in the postoperative phase of our lipoedema patients, we work closely with Dr Birgit Schmid, founder of Aqua In®. Dr Birgit Schmid is a qualified sports instructor, course leader, entrepreneur and founder of the Aqua In® aqua fitness concept. Water has been her element for over 30 years. With a varied career as a scientist, lecturer, therapist and exercise instructor, she is dedicated to health issues relating to swimming and aqua gymnastics.

She noticed that in practice, aqua fitness is either carried out in group programmes or in individual training sessions with therapists. Although many participants find aquafitness to be a beneficial sporting activity, the variety of exercises seems to be difficult to do alone. Dr Birgit Schmid fills this gap with the Aqua In® concept, a way of practising aqua fitness individually but with guidance at the same time.

Water has a transformative effect, especially for women with lipoedema. By exercising in water, women experience their ability and enjoyment of movement, which is often difficult or impossible on land. The decongestive effect of water after each exercise session is particularly appreciated.

At the request of her participants, she developed a way of practising aqua fitness independently of their presence. Her training instructions can be listened to using a waterproof MP3 player and headset. This gave the women the freedom to practise aqua fitness with guidance, without being tied to fixed times.

Birgit Schmid's aim is to make aqua fitness accessible without restrictions in terms of space and time. Whether in the indoor pool after work, on holiday, in the lake or in your own pool - every woman should have the opportunity to do something for her health and fitness. The message of Aqua In® is:

“Aquafitness is flexible, individual and possible everywhere.”

Reasons why lipoedema sufferers experience lightness in the water.

The physical aspects of aqua sports, such as pressure and temperature, make water an ideal environment for sport and exercise.

The temperature affects the metabolism, the pressure affects the vessels

Water conducts heat 100 times more effectively than air. The thermoregulation mechanisms react to the cold stimulus, which stimulates the metabolism and optimises blood circulation. This leads to an increased heart rate, while the pulse rate is lowered over the entire time spent in the water.

The mechanical effect of the water, whether through currents or water jets, gently massages the body and decongests the legs.

For lipoedema sufferers in particular, aqua gymnastics with simple exercises offers effective vascular training and short workouts leave a feeling of lightness.

Running in the water is a very simple as Effective exercise. It can be performed in shallow water as well as in deep water. It is possible to run on the spot or in motion. Both variants relieve the strain on the foot, knee and hip joints and mobilise them at the same time. The fact that running in the water does not only mobilise the Leg muscles, but also Arm and trunk muscles it not only has a positive effect in the sense of a Lymphatic drainage, but also promotes endurance and mobility. How exactly running in the water Lymphatic and endurance training is described in the blog article by Dr Birgit Schmid on her website www.aqua-in.eu to read.
